Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery, once showed off his psychedelically-colored [private jet](http://jets.halogenguides.com/), complete with shag carpet and plush rotating bed. Yeah baby. But in the new age of private flying, such flashy décors aren’t limited to the big screen. In fact there are several companies including BMW Group Designworks USA, Versace, Lufthansa Technik, Gore Design Completions and Edese Doret, stepping up with luxury jet interior designs catering to a new class of ultra-wealthy private fliers.

BMW Group Designworks USA plans to outfit the new Boeing 787, appropriately named the Dreamliner, with a cocktail bar, gourmet kitchen and a big-screen theatre. The two levels of living space are finished off with a fitness center and sauna on the lower level.

“Boeing asked us to come up with something for the young billionaire,” said Gerhard Steinle, Director of Transportation Design for BMW Group Designworks USA, affirming that indeed only the super wealthy could afford the $100 million to $150 million price tag on the custom interior of a Dreamliner. A fully outfitted jet could total around $300 million, but at that price fliers will have plenty of room to spread out. BMW’s configuration is designed for up to 19 passengers, while the commercial version of the Dreamliner is slated to seat 210 to 330 passengers.

Mr. Steinle, said the company emphasized the role of “intelligent luxury” in designing the inside of the Dreamliner. “We didn’t want to show an opulent interior,” said Steinle. That is, if opulence doesn’t mean an onboard garage. After all, the company’s concept renderings depict a see-through floor [pictured] that reveals a client’s automobile in the jet’s cargo hold.

h3. Bigger, please?

Of course, the Dreamliner isn’t the biggest jet on tap for the private flying sect. The even bigger Airbus A380 can seat over 800 passengers on two levels as a commercial jet, but Saudi [Prince Alwaleed bin Talal](http://jets.halogenguides.com/articles/892-world-s-largest-private-jet-ordered-by-alwaleed) will be enjoying one of the planes for himself. An A380 costs more $300 million and that’s before the interior has been designed. According to recent reports, the Prince is prepared to splash an additional $175 million to outfit the jet according to his opulent tastes.

The so-called “flying palace” will feature multiple private bedrooms, a dining room, business center, lounge, movie theatre, exercise room, hot tub and sauna. The design aesthetic has been described as “Lawrence of Arabia meets Star Wars.” It’s anyone’s guess what exactly that will mean in the end, but one detail that’s been released, a fiber optic mosaic covering the plane’s interior depicting shifting desert landscapes, probably gives some indication of what to expect.

What’s most impressive about Prince Alaweed’s customization may not be in the plane’s interior at all. His highness has outlayed $60 million to paint the plane’s fuselage in gold leaf. It seems the plane will not only be the world’s largest private jet, but the largest piece of “bling” as well.
