Eclipse Says Throttle Problem is Fixed

Eclipse 500 cockpit Very Light Jet (VLJ) manufacturer Eclipse Aviation is saying that a software update will fix the throttle problem that led to an incident involving an Eclipse 500 earlier this June at Chicago Midway. That plane’s Pratt & Whitney Canada PW601F turbofan engines became stuck on full throttle, forcing the pilots into a hard landing. In the follow up to that incident the FAA grounded all 207 Eclipse 500s in service until the issue could be identified and resolved.

Eclipse says the new software increases the range limit of the throttle, thereby preventing the fault condition, causes the software to lock the engines at the last known throttle setting, from occurring. Eclipse is also updating its manuals to better help pilots manage if another emergency throttle situation were to occur.

Before the planes can reenter service the FAA will have to approve of the fix.
