Top 10 Military Aviation Movies of All Time

Top gun movie

Once upon a time, flying movies were a staple of Saturday matinee cinema. Along with wrestling flicks and westerns, they have sadly for the most part gone the way of the fifty cent double feature. There have been some great military aviation movies over the years, however, including a few from the not too distant past. Here’s our top ten list of the best military aviation movies of all time.

10. Iron Eagle, 1986

It’s got an embarrassingly cheesy and far fetched story about a teenager flying into a freedom hating middle eastern country who has kidnapped his father, with poor acting and dialogue to boot. However thanks to the cooperation of the Israeli Air Force, there are some pretty cool scenes of F-16s and Mirage fighters, which along with great songs like “We’re Not Gonna Take It” by Twisted Sister, make the film a guilty pleasure.

9. Flyboys, 2006

This movie stunk it up at the box office, and with low watt stars like James Franco, it’s really no wonder. Still it does tell the story of the American volunteers who came to fight for France in World War I, before the official American entry into the war. The flying scenes are a tad too CG intensive, but do include a few actual World War I era craft doing spectacular maneuvers. It makes the list for no better reason than that it is the best, if only World War I aviation movie of the last thirty years.

8. Memphis Belle, 1990

Memphis Belle tells the actual story of the crew of a B-17 Flying Fortress which beat the odds to fly 25 missions over Germany in World War II. It’s pretty typical Hollywood schmaltz, but the tension and danger of the bombing raids is well captured.

7.Flight of the Intruder, 1991

While nobody would call it a classic, Flight of the Intruder is the only movie we can remember about carrier operations during the Vietnam War, and for that it earns a spot on our list. A pair of A-6 pilots, disillusioned by the restrictions placed on their missions bombing North Vietnam, plot a rogue attack on a SAM installation in the middle of Hanoi. Most of the flying scenes look like they were done using models, and the acting and writing are corny, but it is about an overlooked era in military aviation history.

6. Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, 1944

This movie tells the story of James Doolittle’s daring B-25 raid on Tokyo just five months after the Pearl Harbor attack thrust the US into World War II. It’s first and foremost a propaganda flick, produced while the war was still ongoing, but it’s earnestly done. The bombing sequence, which intersperses actual footage of the Tokyo raid with recreations, won an Academy Award for special effects.

5. Hell’s Angels, 1930

This is the film that almost ruined its director/producer millionaire Howard Hughes, as seen in Scorceses’ “The Aviator” a few years back. Anyone interested in classic aviation though will be thrilled by the film’s two set pieces, as literally dozens of vintage World War I aircraft— the real things not models— fly through the air enacting death defying maneuvers in simulated dog fights. Some question as to whether this movie is palatable to modern audiences, what with the rather tedious love triangle plotline (although Jean Harlow, in her first role is every bit the sexy siren), and at times ludicrous acting and dialogue, but those flying scenes stand up even now, almost 80 years later.

4. Pearl Harbor, 2001

For the most part the movie is a testament to how much big budget epics have degraded over the last twenty years, with the strategic sweep and perspicacity of Tora! Tora! Tora! replaced by a rote love triangle and mindless jingoism. The attack scenes though, while perhaps too reliant on CG, are awesome, with countless aircraft including actual rebuilt Japanese Zeroes.

3. Battle of Britain, 1969

First of all you can’t argue with the cast, acting royalty in a young Michael Caine, and Laurence Olivier. While at times a bit slow, the movie does a good job of recounting those dark days of Britain undersiege in 1940, the strategic decisions by Generals on both sides, and most of all the plucky heroism of the RAF in stemming the Luftwaffe attacks. The flying sequences are fantastic with actual Spitfires and Messerschmitts captured by the lens of legendary cinematographer Freddie Young, of Lawrence of Arabia fame.

2. Tora! Tora! Tora!, 1970

A far more nuanced and even handed look at the run-up and execution of the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, Tora! Tora! Tora! can at times be a bit of a slog. But the pace quickens in the brilliant battle scenes, with more than 70 vintage Japanese and American planes squadrons recreating the attack.

1. Top Gun, 1986

Yes, certain technical aspects of modern air combat depicted in the film are somewhat cringe-worthy. F-14’s equipped with “over the horizon” capable AIM-54 Phoenix missiles wouldn’t be likely to engage in close range acrobatic dog fights (at that point it would have been bye-bye carrier.) And the black painted F-5s- called “MiG-28s”- which are supposed to be a formidable adversary to a plane? C’mon. You either love or hate the over-the-top dialogue (“I feel the need…the need for speed!”) and the same goes for the Kenny Logins heavy soundtrack. We’ll leave it to Quentin Tarantino to explore the film’s homoerotic subtext. Where the film succeeds, and why it earns the top spot on this list, is in its pure and riveting depictions of flight itself. However inaccurate the dog fighting scenes may be, no other movie comes close in terms of being able to capture the power and grace of these machines, locked in a mortal pas de deux, as they scream across the sky.

um.....WTF....Pearl Harbor just did not seem that great to me......and you left off The Right Stuff.

I agree with MOST of the list...including Top Gun. However, I would have preferred a different cast. Val Kilmer and Tom Skerrit were perfect...but Tom Cruise couldn't spell F-14...and even though Kelly McGillis looked good in stilletto heels and seams in her nylons...casting her as a 'Phd in aerodynamics' is the height in incredulity. In my opinion...no one has ever made a truly accurate and riveting military aviation (or race car) movie. Jerry Bruckheiner came close...

My vote for best aviation fantasy movie is "A Guy Named Joe", with Spencer Tracey as a cocky B-25 pilot, and Katheran Hepburn as his love interest. Tracey gets killed early, and comes back as a "guardian angel". Smaltzy story, my wife calls it a Chick Flick, but lots of pretty good B-25 and P-38 footage, and a good story.

I would like to see the addition of The Dambusters in there somewhere or the story of Douglas 'tin-legs' Bader. But then I guess you have to draw the line somewhere. I haven't seen all of them so roll on a wet weekend.

Some interesting choices but 'Flyboys' and 'Iron Eagle' over 'The Dambusters' and 'Strategic Air Command' is pretty hard to fathom. Not strictly aviation movies but 'Apocalypse Now' and 'Black Hawk Down' deserve honourable mentions for some stunning helicopter scenes.

you forget : " les chevaliers du ciel" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVXgDY9Xrp8&feature=related

Iron Eagle? Pearl Harbor? Flyboys had a lot of potential with Pilot/Producer Tony Bill, but fell short. The one-fifth of Dr. Strangelove in the B-52 beats those three out. But the most glaring omission? "The Battle of Britain" (1969)

Oops, sorry. There it is at #3

The top 10 list is great Maybe you need a top 20? If so don’t forget Dambusters – Its one of the most exciting and best action aviation movies ever - also Waldo Pepper is great as is 12 O’clock High - in that order.

Gene said:

Kenneth – Wow I forgot about Blue Max – its definitely a top rated film and should be in the list

Paul said:

I think "Thomas Crown Affair" should get an honorable mention due to it's amazing glider scene which leads into a nice shot of a Challenger. Just my two cents.

Let's not forget the 1982 Clint Eastwood's Firefox.

Twelve O'Clock High is a classic that teaches leadership at the Air Force's Command and Staff College

Gene said:

Jim - Your right about 12 O’clock High teaching leadership - and its great. In fact, I had an executive education course at Harvard University in Mass several years ago and they showed the entire move 12 O’clock High, pointing out the psychological and executive leadership and training points that could be gleaned from the movie. When you see the movie in that light, it becomes an even greater classic.

12 O'Clock High is used in Navy Training for Leading Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers (E-6s and E-7s). Our reviewer need to check his history ...the Battle of Britain was 1940...not 1942. I'd also add The Flying Tigers, 633 Squadron, or The Dam Busters.

What about Dambusters, 633 Squadron, Flying Leathernecks (?) (OK a bit too much Big John, but still good), Angels 15, Blue Max, Hells Angels, Aces High...

You gotta be shitting me. Pearl Harbor was GARBAGE Flyboys was a serious letdown Top Gun always bored me. Most of the rest are just OK. The only really good ones on that list are Tora,Tora,Tora and Battle of Britain. You left out Wings, the classic silent film.

How could you miss "The Blue Max"

Oops! Good catch Mike. Changed the date of the Battle of Britain to its correct year of 1940.

Michael Shortt said:

For very realistic flying scenes and pre WW2 flying I reckon one of the best was:-" Reach for the Sky" , the story of the legendary Douglas Bader the legless Battle of Britain Fighter Ace.

Belated dug this up from somewhere. This guy is absolutely out of his mind, and obviously his list is heavy with contemporary work. No mention of Twelve Oclock high? Right Stuff great movie I was lucky enough to see as a kid in a movie theater; for sure it has McCain's bird doing a day landing ala Jose Jimenez. Flight of the Intruder, didn't have great special effects, but I'd take it over Pearl Harbor any day. Tora Cubed was infinitely better, all day long, but I'm old fashioned. Bennifer Affleck and that other guy for all their success and fame, cannot wear Willem Defoe and Brad Johnson's jock in Flight of the Intruder. It had a young Sizemore, Ving Rhames, not to mention Arquette, Danny Glover, and you cannot forget Fred Thompson's memorable courtmartial cameo. Johnson was also in that movie about fire fighting planes with Dreyfuss and Tim Goodman. Always was decent, but Intruder an obscure goodie. Hell Affleck and PH can't even touch Tom Cruise's scientology panties. Top Gun, cheesy as hell, but was great as kid in the 80's. Not a fan of Loggins, but that movie somewhat made it tolerable to listen to. You can't squeeze enough CGI to cover Afflecks ass though. He's an overused bit plalyer. My grand folks were there at Pearl, and pappy was on the Medusa. He had a brother go down in the Arizona. Grandmother said PH grossly exaggerated the flying to say nothing about CGI looking fake to begin with. The cast was pitiful, Ben Affleck is not a serious actor. And the worst thing was, it was so pitiful, it leaves the question, why? WHY? WHY? After Tora Tora Tora, and Saving Private Ryan how could they go out and screw the pooch with a new Pearl Harbor. I think it's up there with Time magazine planting a tree in Iwo Jima.

I would add We Were Soldiers considering it's about the 1st Cav.
