Phoenix residents may notice their blue Arizona skies darken just a bit this week, as swarms of private jets converge for the all-you-can-eat corporate smorgasbord that is Super Bowl XLII. A recent article in the New York Times detailed some of the commotion on the tarmac during the lead-up to the big game.

The Times reported that private jet providers are booking a record number of flights this year, with 400 already scheduled and even more last minute flights expected in the days leading up to the game. Sentient Jets, for one, has experienced a 50 percent increase in bookings this year compared to 2007, and the company is offering a special Superbowl flight package.

Part of the reason for the jump in traffic is not only the Super Bowl, but all of the satellite events that surround the big game, from celebrity golf tournaments and VIP parties to team meet and greets. In fact, the week has become a favorite time for Fortune 500 companies to woo potential clients.

The event, naturally, has emerged as a hot ticket with the private jet set, but this year’s match up has seemingly created a perfect storm to attract such travelers. Not only are many clamoring for a chance to see what could be an historic Super Bowl (the Patriots look to go an unprecedented 19-0 on the season), but the influx of game watchers arriving by private jet has no doubt been buoyed by the fact that this year’s teams, the New York Giants and New England Patriots, hail from cities with well-heeled financial centers. And these fans aren’t likely to be disappointed by their host city, Phoenix. Two years ago, when Detroit hosted the big game, a number of visitors were perturbed at the lack of 5-star accommodation. Phoenix on the other hand has no shortage of luxury resorts, world-class golf courses and perhaps the greatest early February perk, warm weather.
